It has been my good fortune to have had Paul Olko as my therapist since 1983.
During this ten-year period, especially from 1983 until his move to Virginia I saw Paul on a regular monthly basis and he prescribed Chinese Herbal formulas frequently, and with great success, for conditions such as allergies, headache, gastric distress and sore muscles.
I make regular trips to his Virginia practice and consult with him long distance when necessary. His expertise in Chinese Herbal treatments has contributed greatly to my good health and wellbeing.

Hi Lisa,
Bless you for checking on me. I meant to E-mail you last night, but I thought it might be premature. The tea is absolutely the worst tasting stuff I have ever had in my mouth...and I could have sworn the first dose knocked out whatever was in me!...though the little I know about Chinese Herbs, I think they're gentler than that, LOL. I DID NOT NEED A NEBULIZER AGAIN YESTERDAY AFTER HAVING THE TEA!!! That was amazing because I had been having to use it 3 times per day to breathe. I have a slight headache, but my sinus drainage went from gray, green, yellow and red to clear overnight! After drinking a few doses of the tea yesterday. I did feel really tired, but this morning I have more energy. I can't tell you how thankful I am, and amazed.
J got the "Java Jive" article for me out of the filing cabinet. That was an eye-opening article. I had a cup of tea and read it before leaving your office, but while I was reading, Paul walked by an suggested I just give up the coffee cold turkey. I may do that (after this headache passes from my infection). After reading the article you just sent, the pluses are definitely the reason I have always drunk coffee, but the cons are better reasons at this point in my life, to get off of it. Thanks for sending that.
J also told me about Paul's band at Friday's after Five, so we may try to go. G, whom you met, and her husband are big Beatles fans. He and I played Beatles music together for some friends one night.
I really do not know how to start this letter. You have done so much to improve several of my physical problems.
I guess I should start by saying that I had visited a chiropractor for a very stiff neck, numbness in my entire left arm, and headaches that I could no longer tolerate. After x-rays and a thorough exam, the chiropractor told me that he couldn’t help me and suggested I see an orthopedic surgeon. He indicated that cartilage was worn thin between vertebrae and the nerve was being pinched.
I then went to my family doctor who prescribed some pain pills and said that should take care of it. They only eased the pain for a short while, and who wants to live on pain pills?
Then one night I had the worst, most painful and uncomfortable nights of my entire life. Here I might indicate that I am 57 years old. The next morning I was ready to check myself into the hospital. I couldn’t take it any longer.
My wife D suggested I try massage therapy. She had heard some good things about you. So out of desperation I said what can I lose? I’ll try him before going to the hospital.
I will never forget my first visit. After a one hour massage I felt taller, lighter on my feet and my headache seemed to show strong signs of relief.
I felt so much better that I began coming twice per week for massage therapy. Both you and I know how much improvement was made. Then I attended Yoga classes by your recommendation and within three months the signs of improvement were phenomenal.
Paul, you have been a blessing for me, and I will always be grateful for all the good you have done. You know I will miss you very much, however I want you to take that as a compliment, and not as a “poor me.” I sincerely wish you and your family only the best and trust that this move will bring you happiness and much success.
If I ever have serious trouble again, you will probably see me on your doorstep in Charlottesville.
Keep up the good work. America needs more people like you.

This is a little note to declare the amazing news that I no longer have Hep C . . . I was diagnosed with it in 1994, and have no idea how long I really had it. I have been asymptomatic.
After two years of taking the Chinese herbs recommended by Paul, I was shocked and delighted beyond measure to learn that I no longer have it! Thank you, Paul!

For the last six months I have had the good fortunate to be under the care of Paul Olko. I started treatment for a herniated disc in my lower back in January, 1993. At first I went to Paul once a week, then three times a week, and now every other week. Early on we concentrated on my back problem. Later, however, his wide range of expertise as a Chinese Herbalist became evident as we began treating other problems (a cold, hay fever, and PMS).
As a health care professional, I would like to note other aspects of Paul’s caring style. First, he gives a thorough exam, looking at the whole picture. Second, and what impresses me most, are his continuous evaluations. Paul listens to what his patients say about how they are feeling and adjusts the treatment if it is necessary.
Please consider this letter in good faith to grant Paul Olko a certificate as a Chinese Herbalist.

Hi Paul,
Here's my testimonial:
First and foremost, I'd like to express my gratitude to Paul for helping me through a health crisis and restoring my overall health. I came to Paul with very high blood pressure that resulted from a drug reaction, two frozen shoulders, and pain everywhere in my body. Within two weeks, through Chinese massage and herbal formulas, my blood pressure returned to normal range.
At that point, my health crisis was over and during the next four months, Paul continued to loosen up my frozen shoulders so that I could regain normal daily functioning, such as dressing, cooking, and cleaning. Throughout this time, I was reassured knowing that Paul was there for me each week - listening, observing, encouraging, and offering his decades of experience as a healing practitioner. It was a difficult period for me, as I was in excruciating pain, and it meant a lot to me that Paul cared so much about my healing. I don’t know how I would have made it through this time without his help. In addition to the body work and herbs, Paul made recommendations on diet, supplements, and exercise. It all helped.
We are now moving on to a different phase of my healing and I am happy to focus on my overall well-being. Each day I appreciate the pain-free use of my hands, arms, and legs throughout my normal routine. I have also returned to playing music, one of my passions in life! Thank you, Paul.
See you soon,
S
Thank you Paul and Lisa Olko for the great health changes you both have developed in me over the last year. By following both your dietary and supplemental advice, I have lost over twenty pounds and my LDL (bad cholesterol) has been reduced 45 points from 180 to 135. I took no statins, I had no bad side effects, but I experienced changes that give me a manageable balance I have been looking 21 years for.
I would like older women who think they cannot lose weight because of their slowed down metabolism to know that I did. My fifty-eight year old body has transformed and it is amazing to me! It was simple, easy and I don’t feel deprived when I follow your guidelines. I eat a lot of satisfying food. I just eat it in a different way. I only wonder what incredible shape I would be in if I completely followed your directions!!

My compliments for being “right on” about so many health maxims, e.g., hard flour, fruit, juices and other no-nos. I now have no symptoms of hypoglycemia and I make out nicely on two meals a day. I had never given this much thought until I reread your handout sheet.
I’d like to ask your advice on my liver problem again. I’m enclosing a copy of a questionnaire completed recently by a naturopath in D.C. (the original questionnaire was mailed to an Ayurvedic hospital in Kerala, but they have yet to respond).
If you recall, you once gave me an aggressive liver stimulant formula of: boldo leaves, fringe tree bark, wild yam root, coriander seeds and marshmallow root. It used to make me ill but now causes little discomfort or further yellowing to the skin. Later, you advised me as to the following herbs which do not stimulate bile production: chamomile, gentian root, rosemary, dandelion root and one or two I can’t recall.
I can’t say the above herbs or formula have been successful in specifically liquefying gallstones, even when I’ve taken the formula ten days prior to a flush.* I must admit my use of the milder herbs individually, was not as measured.
Therefore I’ve enclosed a blank questionnaire, self-addressed stamped envelope and ten-dollar note for you. I would be grateful if you would complete and return the questionnaire as soon as you can.
With all best wishes in all of your studies, your practice and your battle with the AMA.
—C.K.
* Paul, I’ve slowed down on these liver/g.b. flushes because I never seemed to get down to the bottom of the supply. I believe that the stones must be in endless supply. Or perhaps the situation is similar to doing an intestinal cleanser and then eating this or that unknowingly which clogs the walls of the intestines almost overnight. ??
A year and six months ago I had some symptoms which were so severe that I had to go to the ER. I was sent to the chest pain center, they thought I was having a heart attack. I had heart palpitations, some dizziness, light-headedness, shortness of breath, and pressure in my chest. I was checked out, my heart was OK, and I was sent home. The symptoms continued. My doctor was mystified. He prescribed tranquilizers. I didn’t like the way they made me feel and they didn’t address the symptoms, but at least I could sleep.
Then I asked a friend if she knew a good herbalist. I thought that I could get something natural to calm my symptoms. She referred me to Paul Olko. He asked me some questions; he listened to me. He said he thought I had hypoglycemia and recommended a special diet. I followed the diet and immediately felt better. It took a couple of months, but I got off the tranquilizers and now I have more energy than ever. I feel great, and I’ve learned how to manage my blood sugar. I lost 30 pounds, and friends say I look great. I had tried to lose weight for many years. I am ever so grateful to Paul. I continue to see him periodically for those wonderful Chinese massages and to check-in about my health. Lisa is also very supportive, and runs the herb shop where I get supplements. It’s a great service. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is serious about getting healthy without drugs.
